There continues to be a specific, credible threat to Westerners in Benghazi, LIBYA.
The UK Foreign Office has issued this statement:
"We are now aware of a specific and imminent threat to Westerners in Benghazi, and urge any British nationals who remain there against our advice to leave immediately."
LINE 6 - ANALYSIS:
The threat appears to be of the type carried out in Algeria last week.
The majority of the oil fields are located in the eastern "Benghazi" area of Libya (See map below).
The Algerian group is reported to have crossed over from Libya, driving vehicles with Libyan license plates, wearing Libyan uniforms.
Benghazi is plagued with violence from criminal gangs, militias and Islamic fundamentalist groups.
Tripoli has discussed mandatory curfews (midnight - 0500hrs) and security checkpoints at all points leading into/out of the city, however nothing has been implemented as of this report.
LINE 7 - CONCLUSION:
Sources well-placed in Washington DC, Tel Aviv and London corroborate the imminent threat warning.
Western personnel in Benghazi are encouraged to evacuate immediately. If that is not possible, take immediate security precautions to enhance personal / residential security. Maintain a low profile and stay in close contact with your embassy / consulate.
