Today the United States Marine Corps, heavily engaged in Afghanistan after a staged withdrawal from Iraq, is also facing the greatest threats to its structure and identity in decades. While current Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has said the nation "will always have a Marine Corps," he has also said that the Corps has turned into a de facto land army grinding along beside the Army, and questioned whether amphibious landings are a thing of the past due to proliferating anti-ship missiles and other anti-access weapons. For his part, Commandant Gen. James T. Conway would also like to see Marines return to their core capabilities, but he also understands that Marines need the tools to be able to carry out those core missions over a full spectrum of conflict.
