Background
The Iraq Operations Centre (IQOC) has been established as of 1 July 2004 in view of servicing
Iraq and Jordan operations, under the MEO Regional Division; namely through the provision of a
range of cost‐effective project management and related services to the UN clients for resultsbased
solutions that combine logistics, procurement, contract management, personnel
recruitment and administration, financial management, institutional strengthening, capacity
building and reporting.
Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships: UNOPS recruited PDS’s will be seconded to
the Security Section in Iraq (SSI) and will operate within this relationship. Protection Officers will
report directly to designate Protection Team Leaders who in turn report to the Chief Security
Advisor (CSA) Iraq.
Operational Command: All members of the PDS teams will be under the Operational Command
of the CSA for Iraq. Administration and Logistics support will be provided by UNOPS.
• Operate as a UN Protection Officer, in UN security phases 4 and 5.
• Attend team briefings on protection and team related issues.

• Provide inner protection ring for UN staff during missions/official business in UN security
phases 4 and 5 areas.
• Assess venues, collect information and conduct reconnaissance when required.
• Operate weapons, electronic counter measures and high tech equipment used in
protection of UN Staff Members.
• Adhere to ALL SOP’s and instructions as issued from time to time by the CSA.
Work implies frequent interaction with the following:
• SSI Staff members, UNHCR members and UNAMI staff.
• Other UN Agencies staff members.
• UNOPS personnel.
• Multi National Force – Iraq (MNF‐I); Government of Iraq (GOI); and private Security
Companies (PSC) in the field.
• Iraqi nationals
Required Selection Criteria
a. Education:
High School or equivalent diploma is required. Technical or vocational certificate in military or
police procedures and practices and self‐defense techniques or related field is a requirement.
A valid driver’s license is a requirement.
b. Work Experience:
• At least 10 years of progressively responsible security experience with a national or
international police, security or fire brigade organization. Training in martial arts and/or
specialized security practices and procedures an asset.
• Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. Knowledge of a second UN language
especially Arabic is an advantage
c. Key Competencies:

• Internal knowledge of UNAMI protection and security policies, processes and procedures.
• good technical skills to understand and consolidate the varying specializations such as
electronics, communications, mechanics, weapons and other sophisticated devices
encountered in personal protection operations;
• demonstrated ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given;
• ability to detect and identify dangerous objects and knowledge of how to deal with such
objects;
• ability to remain calm in an emergency situation;
• willingness to work shifts; trustworthy; high sense of responsibility and alertness and be
physically fit for duty;
• good knowledge of the locations of organizational units, functions and key personnel;
